LOCATION OF ARREST: 200 W. Cypress Avenue, El Cajon, CA

RESUME OF INCIDENT:
On June 30, 2011, at approximately 2:30pm, the San Diego Sheriff’s helicopter (ASTREA), was flying northbound over the City of El Cajon in the area of W. Main and Sunshine, preparing their approach to Gillespie Field when they were fired upon with a flare gun. The flare exploded an estimated 30 feet from the helicopter. Fortunately, the flare did not impact the helicopter, but could have caused a fire on the aircraft or entered the cockpit and incapacitated the pilot.
The Sheriff’s pilots followed the smoke trail to the suspect below and directed El Cajon Police units into the area. The suspect fled to a nearby apartment complex in the 200 block of West Cypress Avenue where he was ultimately taken into custody for a felony charge of 246PC: Shooting at an occupied aircraft. The flare gun was subsequently recovered and the suspect was eventually transported to Juvenile Hall.
