On 01/14/2011 at approximately 8:50am, the El Cajon Police Department Communications Division received a 911 telephone call from an unidentified male caller telling the dispatcher that he was informed of a shooting that had occurred at Helix High School. Once the dispatcher began asking further questions the male caller disconnected from the line. The Communications Center attempted to regain communications with the caller, however repeated calls to the residence went unanswered.
La Mesa Police Department was contacted and informed of the caller’s statement and were unaware of any type of related incident. La Mesa Police Department subsequently contacted and informed Helix High School officials of the phone call. After being advised, officials at the high school decided to place the school on a “secure campus” alert as a precaution. The El Cajon Police Department, with the assistance of La Mesa Police Department personnel, began an investigation into the origin of the 911 call. In an attempt to facilitate an accurate evaluation of the individual, a clinician with the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (P.E.R.T.), who was currently assigned to the Chula Vista Police Department, responded to the scene.
Once the exterior of the residence was secured, officers initiated additional phone calls into the residence. After several calls initially went unanswered, he eventually did answer the phone and agreed to come outside. The subject came outside without further incident and was detained until he was ultimately taken into protective custody and referred for a psychiatric evaluation by the on scene P.E.R.T clinician.
