TYPE OF INCIDENT: Suicide

LOCATION OF OCCURRENCE: I-8/Greenfield Drive
RESUME OF INCIDENT:
On May 2, 2010, at about 5:43 PM, the California Highway Patrol received calls regarding a vehicle vs. pedestrian accident on I-8 at Greenfield Drive in the City of El Cajon. Upon their arrival, CHP officers found the pedestrian had a pulse and began CPR. Paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital. He died as a result of his injuries at the hospital.
As CHP officers spoke to witnesses, they learned the pedestrian had intentionally run into the path of a semi truck. Because this was an intentional act, CHP contacted the El Cajon Police Department to handle the investigation.
Witnesses said the pedestrian had been standing on the side of the road drinking a beer. As the truck approached, he ran into the roadway and stopped, facing the on-coming truck. The driver of the truck swerved to avoid the subject, but he then ran into the path of the truck again, where he was struck.
The victim has been tentatively identified. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
