TYPE OF INCIDENT: Arrest of Theft/Financial Elder Abuse Suspect

DATE AND TIME OCCURRED: August 18, 2009

LOCATION OF OCCURRENCE: El Cajon, Chula Vista and San Diego

SUSPECT: Emily Forbes, 5-30-61

RESUME OF INCIDENT:

A three-month investigation into several cases of identity theft came to a close Tuesday when detectives arrested the suspect, Emily Forbes, 5-30-61. Forbes was arrested at her current place of employment, Scripps Ranch Family Dentistry at 10299 Scripps Trail, San Diego. Detectives from the El Cajon and Chula Vista Police Departments investigated theft and identity theft cases from a total of five dental offices where Forbes had been employed. During her employment she stole checks from patients and used patients' information to open fraudulent credit accounts. She also used the dental offices' credit card terminals to refund money to checking accounts to which she had access.

Forbes sometimes asked patients to leave their checks blank, telling the victims that she would stamp the dental office’s name on the check. Forbes then deposited the checks into her own account. Members of the community are often taken advantage of by people who appear to be helpful and trustworthy. The police department would like to remind people to fill out checks completely before handing them over to anyone.

18 victims have been identified, six of whom are over the age of 65. San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Paul Greenwood is prosecuting the case and charging Forbes with 20 counts, which include financial elder abuse, burglary, grand theft and forgery. The total loss to the victims is $72,000.
