TYPE OF INCIDENT: Officer Involved Shooting
DATE AND TIME OCCURRED: August 9, 2009, 3:25 AM
LOCATION OF OCCURRENCE: 1200 Block of E. Madison, El Cajon
SUSPECT DESCRIPTION: Black male adult, 5’10 - 6’, 230 pounds, dark shorts and dark shirt. Black male adult, 5’10” - 6’, 180 pounds, dark clothing
RESUME OF INCIDENT: On August 9, 2009, at about 3:25 AM, a two-person CHP unit attempted to stop a vehicle for suspicion of driving under the influence while on eastbound I-8 in El Cajon. The vehicle failed to stop and exited the freeway at Mollison. The CHP unit followed the vehicle southbound on Mollison to Madison, and then eastbound on Madison.
The vehicle came to a stop in the 1200 block of E. Madison, where both the driver and passenger ran from the vehicle. Both officers ran after the driver of the vehicle, who fled towards a shopping center on the northwest corner of Madison and Second. As the officers ran across E. Madison, an unknown suspect, most likely the passenger, began shooting at the officers from south of the traffic stop. The second officer turned back towards the gunfire in an attempt to engage the suspect.
When the officer reached the middle of the street, an occupant of the suspect vehicle accelerated rapidly towards him in an attempt to run him down. The officer fired at the driver of the vehicle as it accelerated towards him. The officer was able to avoid being struck by the vehicle, and it continued on E. Madison, where it made a turn onto N. Second Street towards I-8. Officers from surrounding law enforcement agencies responded to assist with the search for the suspects, but they were not located.
A short time after the incident, officers found the suspect vehicle abandoned in the #2 lane of southbound Highway 125, north of Spring Street in La Mesa. The vehicle had multiple bullet holes in it, and two of the tires had been dammaged. The vehicle had been driven on the rims for a substantial distance, most likely from El Cajon on westbound I-8 to southbound 125 where it was left in the roadway. Investigators are asking for assistance from anyone who saw the vehicle, especially if anyone was seen running from the vehicle, or in the area around 3:50 AM.
The CHP officers were not injured during this incident. Individuals with information on the identity of the suspects in this case are urged to contact Detective Agt. Richard Rouleau at (619) 441-5506.
