March 27, 2009
TYPE OF INCIDENT: Officer Involved Shooting
DATE AND TIME OCCURRED: March 27, 2009, at approx. 12:05 pm
LOCATION OF OCCURRENCE: Avocado Blvd. and Fuerte Dr., La Mesa
SUSPECT: Unidentified Male
RESUME OF INCIDENT: On March 27, 2009, at approximately 11:52 am, the El Cajon Police Department received several calls advising of a male, running in the area of Avocado Blvd. and Chase Ave., brandishing a large knife. Several officers responded and the first officer on scene observed the suspect running southbound on Avocado, near Horizon Hills. When a second officer arrived they contacted the suspect, ordering him to drop the knife. The suspect would not comply with the officers and refused to communicate with them. He turned and charged the officers while still holding the knife. The officers fired several non-lethal bean bag rounds as well as deployed a taser device, all of which had no effect on the suspect.
The suspect continued running southbound, carrying the knife. The officers made continuous efforts to communicate with him in an attempt to determine his intentions. The suspect again turned and charged the officers who fired another volley of bean-bag rounds, again with no effect. Several other officers arrived to assist, and pursued the suspect who was approaching a populated area with several open businesses. The officers again engaged the suspect, attempting to communicate with him to gain compliance. The suspect turned, still holding the knife, and began to approach several officers.
Four of the officers fired their handguns, striking the suspect multiple times. Paramedics and Fire Department personnel responded, however the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Further press information will be provided pending the suspect’s identification, and notification of his family.
None of the officers, or civilians in the area were injured. We encourage anyone who was a witness to this incident to contact the El Cajon Police Department to provide a statement.
We would like to thank the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the California Highway Patrol for their assistance in this investigation.
