Traffic Safety Grant
December 18, 2008
EL CAJON POLICE DEPT. - PRESS RELEASE INFORMATION SHEET CASE: TYPE OF INCIDENT: Office of Traffic Safety Grant Award. $90,000 OCCURRED: October 1, 2008 – September 30, 2009.
LOCATION OF OCCURRENCE: City of El Cajon El CAJON POLICE COMMENCE SPECIAL TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM
More traffic enforcement and safer streets are coming to El Cajon in the coming year. Increased special traffic enforcement measures are on tap as a result of a recent $90,000 grant awarded to the El Cajon Police Department. The El Cajon Police Department is dedicated to keeping our roadways safe through both enforcement and education.
The focus of the DUI Enforcement and Awareness Program grant is to assist in efforts to deal with increased traffic safety problems and reduce the numbers of persons killed and injured in DUI related traffic collisions. The grant activities will specifically target DUI offenders. The program’s goals will be accomplished through the use of DUI/driver’s license checkpoints, special enforcement operations, and court “stings” where DUI offenders with suspended or revoked driver licenses are target for selective enforcement. Also, warrant service operations targeting multiple DUI offenders who violate probation terms or fail to appear in court, “Stakeout” operations that employ police officers to observe the “worst of the worst” repeat DUI offender probationers with suspended or revoked driver licenses, as well as continue a “Hot Sheet” program to notify patrol and traffic officers to be on the lookout for identified repeat DUI offenders with suspended or revoked licenses as a result of DUI convictions. Updated Hot Sheets will be distributed to patrol and traffic officers every three to four weeks.
“When more people buckle up and drive sober and safely, we save lives. It’s just that simple,” said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety. “This grant will help make El Cajon just that much safer of a place to live and work.”
El Cajon Chief of Police Pat Sprecco stated he was looking forward to receiving the grant funding. “Impaired and suspended drivers cause a disproportionate number of deaths and injuries each year. We must do all we can to maintain the safety of our community. With this additional funding, the El Cajon Police Department can continue to combat DUI offenders through proactive enforcement, prevention and education.”
Funding for the grant comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. .
